concepts for a new hotel in Zeltweg.
The design and concept for an Incoming Center at the motorway services area in Zeltweg, Styria, was developed in the course of an invited competition. This Incoming Center comprises a hotel with 136 beds and 60 rooms together with an information point including exhibition and shopping facilities. The requirement set for the Incoming Center was that it should cater specifically for business travellers and incoming tourists arriving at Zeltweg and that it should be an innovative wood-built structure using laminated timber elements. The situation of the services buildings here defines their clear orientation to the priorities of the adjacent motorway traffic. The new complex shares this alignment by providing a motel that can be expanded as a seminar and one-day guest hotel for the events or symposia organised by the HIZ – the Timber Innovation Center - or for business partners from companies in the region etc. It also functions as an event hotel for such major happenings such as the Airpower Air Show, or those from the nearby Red Bull Ring motor sport centre.
The Seewood Network submitted two successful projects in the competition, taking both first and second places and clearly demonstrating its leading-edge competence for innovative timber structures. The use of timber construction in hotels and tourism will now be further researched and developed in the continued planning work for this project.
• Approx. 2,600 m2 floor space, approx. 10,300m3 enclosed space
• Cost-optimised laminated timber construction (earthquake zone)
• Highly energy efficient building / heating / cooling / heat recovery
• Use of solar energy (hot water / photovoltaics)
• Energy network synergy effects with the existing buildings at this location
